For sure, I have spent a fair amount of time in Nicaragua and have a few friends that live there. It's a great country if you are into the third world thing. I'm sure like everything that happens there its all in the favor of uncle Dan and his goons. Its like most third world counties there are have's and have not's and the have's have no intention of sharing with the rest.

Running this canal through their largest fresh water lake doesn't sound like a smart move to me.

Yes I've been to Lake Nicaragua several times and it pretty impressive to see, I think it would have a have a huge impact on the ecosystem. Heck that thing even has fresh water crocodiles.  Unfortunately Ortega doesn't give a crap about eco even though its one of the country's largest source of commerce (tourism)

Its a long history of corruption, heck he sold the railroad that connected the southern part of the county to Managua. Sold it to Venezuela, track and all! Totally screwed his county men with no remorse, really hurt merchants that used that train to ship commodities from the southern farms to markets in the capital Manauga.

Hope I don't sound like a complete fool, but isn't it ridiculous to need another passage, especially so close to the Panama canal?  I must live under a rock cause this is the first I've heard about this.  I'm no tree hugger, but scares me the blatant disregard for the earth..

Like everything its all about the money. Going through Nicaragua will facilitate larger ships, save time/money for some shippers and most importantly grease uncle Dan's pockets. I hope it never happens, Nicaragua is a beautiful county and Lake Nica is a natural wonder not to mention Dan Juan Del Sur that is near by that I believe would be impacted in a negitive manner as well. Neither needs to be destroyed for the sake of ones greed.
